Used Cars Sussex – Expert Advice for Your Test Drive

December 15, 2011 by Nick Bella

If you are going to look at used cars in Sussex then you need to know what you are doing.  By carrying out a little research first you will know what to look out for when you are shopping around for your next car.

There are many used cars in Sussex.  These can be offered by dealers and private sellers.  You need to go and look at the cars in person and give them a thorough inspection.   Here are some useful tips to help you get the most out of your test drive.

1. Look around the car

When you look at used cars in Sussex check the overall condition of the car.  Check the rims, seals, engine bay, boot, foot wells and underneath of the car for signs of rust.

Interiors can be just as expensive to replace as motor parts so make sure the seats, carpets etc are in good condition.

2. Check the controls

Before you take the car out on the test drive check through all the controls and fittings including:

* Lights, indicators and hazard lights
* Horn
* Heaters, climate control and air conditioning
* Radio and any integrated gadgets (such as sat nav)
* Electric windows
* Bonnet and boot release catches.
* Handbrake
* Seat belts
* Seat adjustment
* Door locking system

3.  Out on the road

When you are looking at used cars in Sussex allow at least 20 minutes of road time for the test drive.  This will ensure the car heats up properly and also that you can drive on several different types of roads.  You need to make sure the car can perform at speed, around town and also in traffic.  This will test the cars full range of abilities and ensure it is fully roadworthy.

* Start the car up in neutral and check the exhaust pipe for any excessive smoke.
* Take the car on some back roads if possible and listen out for any clonks or rattles from the suspension.
* Check the steeling feels responsive and there is no vibration through the wheel.
* When the car has warmed up, look for a clear piece of quiet road and test the brakes.  Listen out for any grinding noises or ‘grabbing’ sensations.
* Don’t forget to try out reversing the car.  Make sure there is plenty of visibility for you in the rear.

If you are buying used cars Sussex then make sure you carry out test drives. These will help to reveal any potential problems with the car before you hand over any money.
