A civil war can be defined as “a war which is fought internally within a nation between differing factions, religious groups, or powers”. “Civil war” and “revolution” don’t have the same meaning. Many motives could cause a civil war including: Religious clashes, race conflicts, disputes over power or disputes on natural resources .Throughout history many nations have tested civil wars. Civil wars could last for a very long time (“What is Civil War”). The civil war in the United States in the nineteenth century is different from current conflicts in the Middle East. This essay is going to discuss the differences between civil wars in the two regions, types of civil wars, and possible solution for conflicts in the Middle East.
What were They Fighting for in Civil War, and what are They Fighting for in Middle East?
1. Civil war in US: In the United States of America there were different regions; every region has its own format of economy. The northern states’ economy depended on factories; workers were getting paid for working there. In Midwest states, economy depended on producing wheat; they used machines to harvest it. In the south, economy depended on producing cotton; farms owners used slaves to pick cotton. Owners didn’t pay slaves for their works; they only provided them with homes and food (“Reasons for Civil War”).
There was a conflict between the north and the south about new territories. The northern states were free; they “wanted the new territories to be free”. The southern states wanted new territories to accept slavery because they didn’t want slaves to escape to free territories; they wanted their slaves to be sent back if they escaped there. There was a conflict about if new territories have the right to vote to choose if they want to be free or slave territories. Northern states wanted the laws to be Federal. But Southern states “wanted to make their own laws, instead of the Federal Government making them” (“Reasons for Civil War”).
Abraham Lincoln decided to end slavery. Southern states didn’t like that decision. South Carolina and other 6 states allied together and created the “Confederate States of America (CSA)”. All of these events along side electing Lincoln were the reasons for the civil war (“Reasons for Civil War”). The north or “The Union” won the war (Sweeney). Many opinions claim that the number of deaths because of the civil war reached “700,000” (“Casualties”).
2. Conflicts in Middle East: In the Middle East conflicts are located in more than one country. Those countries include Kurdistan, Palestine and Iraq.
1. Kurdistan: The country of Kurdistan doesn’t exist; Kurds want their own country. Kurds are distributed between Turkey, Iraq and Iran. None of these countries agree to be the homeland of Kurds. Having a homeland is not Kurds’ only problem; religious conflicts also take place between Kurds themselves.
