When working in the retail industry it is important to think about shop insurance. When I opened my small shop in my local town I found I had so much to think about that I actually forgot about getting the shop insured. It was a silly mistake which ended up costing me a fortune as the shop was flooded which damaged a lot of my stock.
Be Covered for All Eventualities
Learning from your mistakes is one thing that goes hand in hand with running your own business. I certainly realised the importance of shop insurance from my experiences and I now advise any one I meet to make sure that they are fully covered.
Get Insured as Soon as Possible
I found a great deal on shop insurance on the Internet. There are various policies which you can purchase, all of which are certainly worthwhile. After being flooded in the storm I made sure that I obtained building cover which would protect me in the future if the same thing happened to me again. I also then went for contents insurance which would have reimbursed me for the damaged stock if I had taken it out earlier.
Finally I added retail liability insurance for good measure. Although the policies do mean I am paying out more it is worth it to have peace of mind. The small outlay is worth it if it means the difference between staying in business and keeping your head above water.
Cheap shop insurance doesn’t need to be substandard – choosing one that works best for your company can help you make substantive savings.
