How to make your own fresh and delicious pasta from home

July 22, 2010 by Mary Smith

It may sound like a mission, but you will be surprised how easy it is to make your own pasta at home. Home made pasta is unbelievably easy, not to mention cheap and delicious. All your need is the right ingredients (which isn’t much) and a pasta roller and voila, fresh pasta for your whole family to enjoy.

Making pasta at home is a simple process whether you use an electric or manual pasta machine or pasta roller. Most pasta rollers also come with a variety of dies, which means you can make a variety of different pastas and not just one.

Here we look at a basic example of how quick and easy it is to make home made pasta:

Manual machine

1. Mix the ingredients according to the recipe for whichever type of pasta you plan on making. There are different recipes for different pasta, sometimes usually included with the pasta roller for your convenience. If not, any recipe can be found online, just do a simple search.

2. Once the pasta dough is made, cut it into pieces that will fit into your pasta roller. Set your pasta roller on its highest setting and feed the dough into the roller.

3. Lower the settings on the pasta roller on each pass of the dough until you have achieved the desired thickness.

4. Next stack or hang the pasta on a drying rack or pan to dry. Pasta can be used immediately or frozen for later use.

For an electric pasta maker

1. Like with the manual pasta roller, prepare the pasta dough according to recipe instructions.

2. Divide pasta dough into small sizes that fit into the pasta roller or machine.

3. Next, use one hand to feed the machine while using the other hand to catch the pasta as it escape from the die.

4. Hang or stack the finished pasta to dry using a rack or pan, cook and enjoy.

Some extra tips:

* Homemade pasta cooks faster than traditional pasta bought in-store. When making your own pasta constantly check its doneness as to not overcook.
* Allow pasta to dry for several hours before freezing. This will prevent the strands from melding together.
