Caring for crystal glassware

April 1, 2011 by Mary Smith

High quality, handmade crystal glassware, whether it be a vase or a set of wine glasses, can be a joy to behold.  However, with incorrect cleaning and care your crystal could quickly begin to look no better than any plain glass item.  So how do you keep your crystal from looking like plain glass?

The first thing to decide is whether or not you actually want to use your crystal glassware.  Accidents can and will happen no matter how careful you are so each time you bring your crystal out for use you run the risk of breaking something.  If it is too precious or you’re not sure your guests can be trusted to take the necessary care than perhaps a look but don’t touch policy is best.

If you do bring out your glassware for use try to rinse out any acidic liquid residues as soon as possible as these can leech the lead from the glass causing it to lose its sparkle.  Rinse under warm but not hot clean water and dry carefully if you’re going to be using the glass or bowl again.  Sudden changes in temperature can lead to cracks or clouding so be very careful.

Crystal decanters and vases should be washed after use to prevent stains from residual liquids.  Decanters should also be stored without their stoppers in place as sealing them can lead to condensation inside the decanter which will also cause stains.

Kitchen appliances are not friendly to crystal glassware.  Microwave ovens will affect the lead in the crystal leading to damage to both so should be avoided.  Dishwashers will lead to clouding and can cause damage simply due to the extreme temperature.  Hand wash all crystal in lukewarm, mildly soapy water and rinse thoroughly before drying.

Lastly it is important to store your crystal in a dust free environment if possible and to not use a cloth to remove dust as this can lead to scratches occurring.  Excess dirt can be removed with the correct washing technique before use.
