Ornithology and bird watching in general is a hugely popular pastime for many. In fact, the observations made by many amateurs often helps to inform the work of the professionals, so what can often seem like just a bit of fun, can also be hugely productive.
Yet, during the colder months, some are put off by what they think will be worse conditions, with potentially fewer birds and much more in the way of cloud possibly spoiling things, whilst for others the cold weather itself is the thing that makes them want to stay indoors.
However, winter and the months surrounding it are often the best time to get out and go bird watching as this is when things start to get much more interesting. There is still plenty to be learnt about the migratory habits of different birds and so the winter is the time to find out some of the most important information and see vast changes in the habits of many birds in a very short time.
To get out there, all you really need is a good pair of binoculars, and if possible a pair of dedicated bird watching binoculars. It also helps to get yourself a guide book and start learning a bit of background about the different birds and their habits so that you can more quickly learn to see when behaviour is different to that which you might expect.
However, whatever reason you might have for wanting to get those bird watching binoculars out, whether it is specifically for study or simply just to observe the fantastic creatures as best as possible, doing so can be great any time of the year, but the winter can make it that little bit more special. So don’t let a bit of snow and rain put you off; put on an extra jumper and get out there.
