The question isn’t why we like white furniture; the question is why some people don’t. White furniture gives us the best of a number of worlds – minimalism, modern, and nostalgia for the good ol’ days. It also gives us some semblance of calm in our increasingly hectic lives.
White furniture need not be reserved exclusively for grownup use, consumption and enjoyment; allow the children a little bit of light as well.
White could be a great canvas on which to build a room that is comforting, relaxing, or invigorating. This works because white is a neutral colour that is far more forgiving than black can ever hope to be. Team it with furnishings in yellow, green, pink or even red during the month of love. Or mix it with black for some retroness.
Minimalism
Minimalism doesn’t work for everyone but for some it could be a life-long love affair. Some couple decide to furnish their homes in ‘white-on-white’ because they can. They have no young children nor do they have pets and they tend to be involved in the interior design or fashion industries. White furniture makes a room seem even bigger and lighter than what it really is. This can be a compelling enough reason to go the ‘white-on-white’ route. Or even with just a few pieces if ‘white-on-white’ is too severe or minimalist.
Nostalgia
Many of us have fond memories of our childhood. Perhaps we remember the summer vacations at grandparents’ houses or perhaps we think back fondly to the long, lazy afternoons we spent at a friend’s house during our youth. So it’s only natural that we’d want to recreate those memories in the form of white furniture. This may especially be true for baby boomers who were born during the 1950s, though younger generations are also fond of furniture that allow them to make that trip to the past.
Style, glitz and glamour
One of the adjectives that spring to mind when thinking about white furniture is how stylish it can look when paired with the right accessories or colour scheme. How many of us know a stylish uncle or aunt who preferred the clean lines of white furniture, especially white leather furniture? These furniture pieces will always be en vogue even years after their owners’ death.
Modern
While it’s true that white furniture looks modern, it also offers the advantage of eternal youth, which is something that nearly everyone wants to attain. Even people who would normally prefer a nostalgic, retro-inspired look might want to decorate one or two rooms with furniture that have sharp, clean lines.
